When a person’s speech is difficult to understand, there are three main categories that the difficulties can be caused by:
Articulation difficulties
The way we move our mouths to make clear speech sounds.
For example, a child with a lisp where /s/ goes to /th/, or whose speech sounds ‘slushy’.
Phonological based difficulties
Phonological processes are a typical part of language development. Think ‘tar’ for ‘car’, ‘sue’ for ‘shoe’, ‘broom’ for ‘vroom’, or ‘nana’ for ‘banana’.
Sometimes processes can stick around for longer than expected, or a child may present with phonological errors different to typical developmental processes. This can result in a child being difficult to understand .
Children with phonological difficulties can produce sounds correctly but may use them in the wrong place.
Motor Speech Difficulties
Arise from difficulty moving the muscles needed for speech production.
These difficulties are usually due to weakness or reduced coordination.
The approach we use to treat speech sound disorders will depend on the underlying cause of the difficulties. Your speechie will work with you to figure out the best treatment approach.

Stuttering is a form of neurodiversity. It is not something to 'fix' or to hide.
We offer stutter-affirming therapy that celebrates and supports each person’s unique communication style. Our approach focuses on empowering individuals who stutter to build confidence, reduce communication effort and promote self-advocacy.
We encourage connection through stuttering support groups such as:
We do not offer behavioural therapies that encourage people to mask stuttering.
“[By] working together, people who stutter and Speech Pathologists can make the world a safer place to stutter.” – Gerlach-Houck & Constantino, 2022

We support students with difficulty learning to read and write using evidence-based, systematic synthetic phonics approaches.
We are formally trained in delivering the following literacy programs:
No one child is the same, which is why it is essential that you and your Speechie work together to create an individualised therapy plan, incorporating the most appropriate approach for your learning needs and your family.
